Lab 5 (Update to Lab 4)

Map 7 (Panning and Zooming)

http://www.gameofthronesmap.org/

I have been waiting to use this map for a while. I am also going to use some elements of this map for my Final Project. It is a very detailed map of Westeros and Essos which are the two continents in HBO's hit series  Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin's hit novel A Song of Ice and Fire. It has the ability to zoom in and see some basic geographic features and cities. As well, it allows for panning between Westeros and Essos.

Map 6 (Splash Screen)

http://www.amctv.com/TWD360/alexandria-tour/

This isn't necessarily a traditional map but a 3D view of the hit series The Walking Dead's geographical zone/neighborhood and surrounding area in the most recent season. It explores the area of Alexandria, Virginia. The splash screen is a dramatic introduction to the area.

Map 5 (Interactive Timeline)

http://www.pbs.org/kera/usmexicanwar/timeline_flash.html

This Timeline for this map is very informative. I particularly enjoy the date markers where the map stops to give an important piece of historical information that pertains to geographical concerns during the US and Mexican war. It starts with the background information of both countries and leads into the war.

Map 4 (Shape Tweens)

http://www.the-map-as-history.com/demos/tome12/12_03_founding_of_rome_downfall_empire.php

This Map is a little bit clunky, but it gets the job done showing the advancement of the Roman empire from a small area in Italy to the majority or Europe, part of the Middle East, and along the coastline of North Africa. Interestingly enough it also tracks the fall of the Roman empire when it was sacked by the Vandals.

Map 3 (CheckBoxes)

When we needed to find a map with check boxes I remembered always seeing check boxes for polls among other things during the Presidential elections. I found this map on the new york times website. It allows for us to experiment depending on what we value to make a prediction for what was the upcoming election.

Final Project Proposal

Game of Thrones will start its 5th season April 12th. There have been many battles throughout the series, specifically during the War of 5 Kings. The War of the 5 Kings takes place throughout the entirety of the show (in a manner of speaking), but more specifically in Seasons 2 and 3.

Thus for my final project I was planning on creating a detailed Game of Thrones War map. There are 27 battles during the War of 5 Kings. I was planning on also mapping the paths of important characters (the 5 kings, Arya and the Hound, the Mountain, etc). Infographics possibly for the important battles, or turning points.

The most prominent houses and their accompanying lands can be seen through this map which I plan to use for shape tweens throughout the timeline of the war. This can demonstrate how the war proceeded for each king. It will demonstrate the ebb and flow of the war which I think will be interesting.

I don't believe that anything has been done before to illustrate the motion and tides of the battles in the Game of Thrones world. Therefore I had to illustrate something similar to this concept with a World War 1 control of Europe map.

A few issues that could be concerning are digitizing a basemap. There has been talk that Westeros is just the United Kingdom upside down, so perhaps that might be an easier avenue. However it does not match up exactly with the generally well known maps of westeros and essos.
